Bouldering · Top rope · Lead · 22,000 sq ft

The wall stays. The beta changes.

180 problems on the floor, 22 roped lines, and a fresh set going up somewhere in the building every night but Friday. Pick a grade and watch the sequence light up, hold by hold, the way a setter would show you.

Walls & disciplines

Four ways to get properly tired.

Everything is under one roof and everything is measured, because climbers ask. Angles are off vertical, heights are floor to the last clip.

Bouldering

4.6 m · 10° to 45° · 180 problems

No rope, no partner, mats wall to wall. The Slab is where first days happen. The Cave at 45 degrees is where forearms go to die. Top-outs on the Prow only, and you climb down the stairs like everyone else.

Top rope

12 m · 16 stations · 4 auto-belays

Sixteen stations, four of them auto-belay so you can climb alone at 7am. Belay check at the desk takes ten minutes if you already know how. If you don't, the class is 90 minutes and $45.

Lead

14 m · 6 lines · 25° headwall

Six lines, bolts every 1.2 m, and a 25-degree headwall that keeps the last four clips honest. Lead card required to tie in; the test runs Tuesdays at 7 and takes about forty minutes.

Spray wall & training

3.2 m · 40° · 96 holds

Ninety-six holds, no set problems, no tape, no grades. Make your own and argue about it. Two fingerboard bays beside it and floor space to actually warm up. The spray wall never gets reset. That is the point.

The set list

Something new goes up every night but Friday.

Three setters, one rotation, no surprises. When a wall is being stripped only that wall closes, and there is always a sign at the bottom of the stairs. Tonight's row is marked.

That adds up to 180 problems on the floor at any hour we are open. Every problem gets four weeks, five if people keep coming back to it, and the log book by the desk decides which ones earn the extra week. Setters this season: Nita Fenwick, Dov Aranda and Priya Sundstrom — ask them which of their own problems is lying to you.

First visit

You do not need to be strong to start.

Nobody here is watching you, they are all staring at a hold they can't reach. Here is the whole first hour, in order.

1Waiver, two minutesOnline before you come or on a tablet at the desk. Under 18s need a parent to sign it in person, once, and then never again.
2Floor briefing, 20 minutesEvery half hour from 10:30. How to fall, where not to stand, what the tape means, and why you never walk under someone on the roof.
3Shoes onRentals run kids' 12 through men's 15 and they get washed, properly, every night. Wear socks the first time; you can decide about that later.
4Start on the SlabYellow tape, ten degrees, big feet. Nobody's first day starts in the cave — ours didn't either. Expect to be tired after forty minutes and that is normal.
