The services, in detail

Quoted per piece · No surprises

I.Restoration & conservation

Heirlooms and estate pieces brought back honestly — original finish preserved where it can be, documented where it can't. Every piece photographed before a tool touches it.

Typical turnaround 4–8 weeks · written estimate first

II.Hand checkering

Cut with hand tools at 18 to 26 lines per inch — recuts, repairs, and full patterns. Borders matched to the original maker's style on request.

Typical turnaround 2–3 weeks · pattern proof supplied

III.Rust bluing & case colour

Slow-process rust bluing the traditional way: card, boil, repeat. Deep, even, and far more durable than a hot-salt dip. Case colour by arrangement.

Typical turnaround 3–5 weeks · metal prep included

IV.Stock bedding & fit

Glass bedding, pad fitting, and length-of-pull measured to you — not to a chart. Bring the clothes you actually shoot in.

Typical turnaround 1–2 weeks · fitting by appointment

The bench

One bench · One pair of hands

Troutman's is a one-bench shop, and that's the point. Every job is handled start to finish by the same hands — no batch work, no apprentice pile. The shop takes on what it can finish well, and the ledger stays honest: if the queue is eight weeks, you'll hear eight weeks. The shop opened with one vise, one light, and a rule about not rushing metal.
